This puzzle focuses on addition and subtraction at a 3rd grade level. 

Puzzle 1: Pirate's Addition Quest

Objective: Solve four clues related to addition to find the four-number combination.

Instructions:
1. Clue 1 - Pirate's Birthdate: Ye know Captain Bluebeard, the bravest pirate on the seven seas? Aye, add the numbers in his birthdate, and ye'll find a clue to a hidden treasure. Be sharp, me lads and lassies; the riches await!
2. Clue 2 - Pirate's Gold: Arrr, listen up, me young sea dogs! Gather 'round for a golden puzzle:
What be the total when ye add the first five pieces of pirate gold, shimmerin' and glintin' in the sun? Find the answer, and ye'll be one step closer to the hidden booty. Think like a pirate, and ye'll solve it in no time!
3. Clue 3 - Crew Count: How many shipmates and feathered friends be aboard this fine vessel? Count the number o' pirates and the number o' squawkin' parrots on the ship, and add 'em together. Ye'll be findin' a number that leads to treasure!
4. Clue 4 - Apple Bounty: If ye have 3 shiny apples in yer treasure chest and find 6 more on a tropical island full of bounty, how many apples have ye gathered for the feast?

Inside the Bag (Puzzle 1): Place Puzzle 2, the map, and the note: "Arrr, great job, matey! Now, follow this map to the Subtraction Cove!"  

Visual Appeal Tips: Use pirate-themed illustrations, treasure chests, maps, and golden coins to make the clues visually appealing.

Puzzle 2: Subtraction Cove Adventure

Objective: Solve four clues related to subtraction to find the final four-number combination.

Instructions:
1. Clue 1 - Pirate's Booty: If ye be holdin' 10 gleamin' golden coins, and ye hand over 5 to a matey in yer pirate crew, how many coins be remainin' in yer treasure pouch? Count well, for the answer leads to riches untold!
2. Clue 2 - Ship's Path: Set yer course on the treasure map, startin' at Pirate's Cove, sailin' past the Whisperin' Palms, and anchorin' at the Mermaid's Rock. Count the steps from Pirate's Cove to Mermaid Rock (11) and then from Pirate's Cove to Skull Island (4). Subtract the steps to Skull Island from the total steps to Mermaid's Rock, and ye'll be one step closer to findin' the buried treasure! Yarrr!
3. Clue 3 - Treasure Map: From the number 15, subtract the islands ye've spotted, and tell me what be left, or ye be walkin' the plank! Har har!  (the number of islands is 7. Pirate’s Cove is not an island)
4. Clue 4 - Candy Plunder: Ahoy, matey! On Candy Island, ye start with 15 sweet treasures. But beware the candy-eatin' sharks! How many treasures do ye have left after they've had their share?

Inside the Bag (Puzzle 2): Include a treasure chest or pouch with a small prize or congratulatory note.

Visual Appeal Tips: Incorporate pirate hats, swords, ships, and other imagery. You could also add sand or small shells for a tactile experience.

- Encourage students to work together and support one another.
- Have fun with it! Use pirate language and even dress the part if you wish.
